The Fresno and Clovis high school students we mentor at the Center for Advanced Research and Technology (CART) are keeping a saltwater coral reef aquarium in their classroom and learning positive, cutting-edge techniques for land-based coral spawning with the goal of selecting for more resilient individuals to increase genetic diversity in the wild.
Also, by participating in the LiMPETS community science program, our students visited the Natural Bridges State Beach tidepool area near Santa Cruz and participated in a transect survey of California tidepool animals.
Coming up in April this year, we’re excited about bringing the students to the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco for the first time to meet longtime friends of Aquarius Aquarium Institute, Senior Director Bart Shepherd and Curator of Special Projects J. Charles Delbeek – two of the most preeminent experts in the keeping of living corals in aquariums. The students will experience the Steinhart Aquarium’s 212,000 gallon reef aquarium, learn about its tremendous coral growth over the past 17 years and be inspired to set the bar high in their own classroom aquarium.
Your continued support is making an impactful difference in the education of our students today. Thank you.
